Industry News Actors' Equity Sets Protocols For the Return of In-Person Auditions

The stage performers' union will not re-open their audition centers, but is allowing employers to host their own in-person calls.

Actors' Equity is clearing the way for the return of in-person auditions with new protocols for how employers can safely host their own calls. The union, which represents professional stage actors on Broadway and at professional theatres across the country, has not re-opened union-run audition centers.

The newly announced guidelines, which are in effect through at least May 29, still ban accompaniment by unmasked musicians, partnering in dance calls, and eating or drinking. All attendees must also wear face masks with the exceptions of actors that are actively auditioning—the protocol says "the time unmasked should be as minimal as possible."

Everyone entering the audition venue will also be required to undergo a COVID-19 symptom check and provide evidence of either full COVID-19 vaccination, a negative PCR test from within 48 hours prior, or two negative antigen tests, the first taken the night before and the second taken no less than two hours before the audition.

The union has additionally set guidelines regarding holding room sizes and capacity. Take a look at the full announcement here.

The move, being made on a trial basis so Equity can evaluate its efficacy and usefulness, comes as mask and vaccine requirements are being relaxed nationwide. New York recently ended both its indoor mask and vaccine requirements for businesses, though both are currently still required for Broadway audiences.
