An industry reading of the new musical God, Sex, and Musical Theater—based on Tony nominee Kristin Hanggi's 2020 poetry book of the same name—will be presented March 27 at the Royal Family Performing Arts Space in New York City.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and music and lyrics by Grammy nominee KT Tunstall, the cast will include Astrid Van Wieren (Come From Away), Jordan Kai Burnett (Gene & Gilda), Cicily Daniels (Pirates! A Penzance Musical), Becca Suskauer (Pretty Woman national tour), Ashley E. Matthews (Rock of Ages), Gina Naomi Baez (Women on Fire), and Justin Rivers (A Transparent Musical). Hanggi will also direct.
God, Sex, and Musical Theater shatters the fourth wall when an audience member is pulled onstage and thrust into a surreal heroine’s journey. The musical is described in press notes as a "rock-fueled theatrical rite—part concert, part ceremony, part audience initiation—transforming the theatre into a shared exploration of desire, divinity, and creative awakening."
“This show asks the question: 'What if our longing is sacred?',” said Hanggi in a statement. “Working with KT has felt like finding a creative soulmate. Her music doesn’t just propel the story, it cracks open its emotional core. Together we’re creating a theatrical rite of passage that invites people to feel what they were never taught to say.”
“I was so moved by Kristin’s original writing; deeply soulful, very funny, and completely relatable,” added Tunstall. “This show is unlike anything I’ve worked on before, and I’m beyond excited to see it on stage, thrilling audiences as much as it’s already thrilling me.”
Stage management is by Josh Blye with casting by Daryl Eisenberg, general management by Joel Glassman, and music supervision by Lena Gabrielle (SIX).
The creative team is currently eyeing a regional development production in 2027, followed by a New York production in 2028.
