Abingdon Theatre Company will host an invite-only industry presentation of Cris Eli Blak's His Name Was Bobby Short, the company's first commission, March 4. Chad Austin is directing, and is the project's conceiver.

The bioplay centers on longtime Café Carlyle performer Bobby Short, who died in 2005 at the age of 80. With a repertoire of more than 500 songs, Short was best known for interpretations of songs by Cole Porter. The project, adapted from Short's memoir King of Cabaret, will also feature some of those songs.

The reading cast will feature Curtis Wiley (Ain’t Too Proud), Maria Bilbao (Sweeney Todd), Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll & Hyde), Annelise Cepero (West Side Story), Lorenzo Scott (Feud: Capote vs The Swans), Rema Webb (Hell’s Kitchen), and Jeffrey Grover (Feud Capote’s Women). Allison Hohman will stage manage.
