Lynne Robinson's The Land will make its New York debut with a private industry reading presented by Women in the Arts and Media (WAM) Coalition March 23 at The Actors Temple. Shellen Lubin is directing.
The work centers on the Israel-Palestine war through the lens of two women, a Palestinian and an Israeli. Tracking events that take place in 2000-2008, the timely work ultimately explores how the conflict has led to the violence happening there today. Esra Dayani, Haneen Arafat Murphy, and Cynthia Straus will star.
Megan Hanlon is serving as stage manager. The performance will be followed by a conversation moderated by nonviolent communication expert and activist Roberta Wall, part of the series Conversations in America - The Middle East, Women, and Art.
“There is perhaps no more volatile subject in the realm of foreign affairs than the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs,” says Robinson in a statement. “I have attempted to go to the root of the crisis by drawing on my knowledge of both ancient and modern Israel and the journey of my people, the Jews, throughout both Diasporas. With the assistance of women and men from all over the region, I have sketched out a possible scenario that offers hope and renewal after so many centuries of common despair."
