The upcoming documentary Broadway Rising has its world premiere June 13 at 5PM during the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. The movie is directed by filmmaker Amy Rice (By the People: The Election of Barack Obama), and produced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Take Me Out revival), Justin Mikita, Sam Bisbee, Christopher G. Cowen, and Rice.
The 93-minute documentary follows theatre subjects, ranging from stage doorman to actors, on their the journey back to the stage following the historical COVID-19 shutdown. The synopsis teases that it will "paint a full picture of the strength and diversity of the people on the stage and behind the scenes and their resilience, hope and dedication of being part of Broadway’s reopening." In addition to the premiere screening, the film will screen June 16 at 3:15 PM and 19 at 12 PM at Village East by Angelika: Theater 6 during the festival which ends June 19. Following the world premiere will be a conversation with Rice, Ferguson, and more Broadway favorites, along with a special performance.
Ferguson commented on the film in 2021. "This film is for that kid, who like me have no other option but theatre and who have, for the last two years, been forced to reevaluate that dream and wonder 'what now?'" he shared. "Broadway is the soul of New York City, and I am so ready to celebrate its reopening."
Broadway Rising is executive produced by Hallee Adelman, Ivy Herman, Jackie Kelman Bisbee, Lance Acord, Cody Ryder, Wendy Neu, Justin Lacob, Bryn Mooser, Andy Hsieh, and Franklin Carson, with Eric Nelsen and Sainty Nelsen as co-executive producers, and Danielle Massie as a co-producer.
