Shaina Taub's Tony-nominated suffragist musical Suffs may be closed on Broadway, but it's kept marching around the country in a tour and now, soon, onto PBS' Great Performances. The performing arts program has announced that Suffs will air May 8 at 9 PM ET; check local listings. It will also be available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS app.
Suffs, which ran on Broadway from March 26, 2024, to January 5, 2025, follows the real-life women who pushed for passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Taub won two Tonys for Suffs, for Best Book and Best Score, making her the first woman to win in both categories by herself. It was directed by Leigh Silverman.

The PBS broadcast will feature Taub as Alice Paul, Tony winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont and Phoebe Burn, Laila Erica Drew as Phyllis Terrell and Robin, and Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay
Also in May, Great Performances will air Tony-winning director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall's new revival of Irving Berlin's Top Hat, about a Broadway star (played by Phillip Attmore) and a model (Amara Okereke) who fall in love. Top Hat will air May 15 at 9 PM ET and will be available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS app.
Inspired by the 1935 movie musical starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the show features Berlin classics such as “Cheek to Cheek,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” It's adapted for the stage by Matthew White and Howard Jacques. The production, which has not played the U.S., originated in the U.K., where it is currently on tour.
