Time to mourn for Wicked. All eyes were on Wicked: For Good for Broadway-focused cinephiles January 22 as nominations were announced for the 2026 Academy Awards, but the stage-to-screen musical came out completely empty-handed. The performance is a surprising one for the film, the second of the two movie adaptations of the Broadway musical.

Both films have been box-office bonanzas, and 2024's Wicked fared surprisingly well with the Oscars, picking up 10 nominations, including Best Picture and actor nods for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Notably, the second film failed to get nominations in the Costume Design (by Broadway vet Paul Tazewell) and Production Design (by Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales) categories, despite winning both last year. The Academy also declined to recognize composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who penned two new, original songs for this second Wicked film, Elphaba's "No Place Like Home" and Glinda's "The Girl in the Bubble."

In more positive news, Sinners, Ryan Coogler's horror musical has become the most nominated film in Oscar history, netting 16 nominations. The film has shattered the previous record, shared three ways by 1950's All About Eve, 1997's Titanic, and 2016's La La Land, which had all received 14 nominations.

The film, which takes place in the depression era Mississippi Delta, blends delta blues, early country-bluegrass, and traditional Irish folk music for a final product that has been widely hailed across the industry as a generational game changer, making musicals 'culturally cool' in the eyes of the general public in a way that has evaded other successful musical films of the 21st century, such as the aforementioned La La Land. Sinners' 16 Oscar nominations include Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Actor in a Leading Role for Michael B. Jordan, Actor in a Supporting Role for Delroy Lindo, Actress in a Supporting Role for Wunmi Mosaku, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Achievement in Casting, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Cinematography, Film Editing, Best Original Song for “I Lied to You”, Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects.

Hamnet, adapted from Maggie O'Farrell's novel centered on legendary playwright William Shakespeare after the tragic loss of a son, also emerged as one of the year's most nominated films, with eight total nods, including Best Picture. The film is also up for Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design, Leading Actress (for West End star Jessie Buckley), and Direction.

Also getting recognition was Blue Moon, last year's biopic centered on Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. Robert Kaplow picked up a nomination for his original screenplay, and Broadway vet Ethan Hawke, who stars as Hart, got a nomination for Leading Actor.

Animated movie musical KPOP Demon Hunters also received some love from the Academy, getting nominations in the Animated Original Film and Original Song categories, the latter for "Golden."

Winners will be named at the 98th Annual Academy Awards March 15, to be hosted by Conan O'Brien. The ceremony will broadcast live on ABC (check local listings).
