The Dramatists Guild of America has announced its 2022 award winners, who will be celebrated with a ceremony honoring 2021 and 2022 recipients July 25 at Joe's Pub, located within Off-Broadway's The Public Theater.

English playwright Sanaz Toossi will receive The Horton Foote Award, given to writers who explore the ineffable nature of being human. The Frederick Loewe Award, recognizing achievement in a theatrical score staged in New York during the previous theatrical season, will be presented to composer Jeanine Tesori for her work on the Broadway-bound Kimberly Akimbo. Nancy Garcia Loza and Ren Dara Santiago will receive the Lanford Wilson Award, presented to playwrights for their early-career work.

The late Alice Childress has been named the winner of The DLDF Defender Award, presented by the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund for efforts in support of free expression in the performing arts. Childress' Trouble in Mind made its Broadway debut this past season.

Pearl Cleage and Tina Howe are the recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards, presented by the Dramatists Guild Council, in recognition of their work in theatrical writing. They join previous winners Adrienne Kennedy, A.R. Gurney, John Guare, Micki Grant, Paula Vogel, Terrence McNally, Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, Lanford Wilson, Joseph Stein, Horton Foote, August Wilson, Stephen Sondheim, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Neil Simon, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Edward Albee, and Arthur Miller.

“The Guild is excited to honor such a brilliant and diverse group of dramatists—from new and necessary voices to writers who have been leading the way for many years, the slate of award recipients this year is one to celebrate,” shared Amanda Green, president of the Dramatists Guild in a statement
