Martin Crimp's adaptation of Cyrano finishes is U.S. premiere run at Brooklyn Academy of Music May 22. The Olivier-winning production, which stars James McAvoy in the title role, transferred from London, beginning its delayed run April 5.
Jamie Lloyd directs the production which also stars Michele Austin, Adam Best, Sam Black, Nari Blair-Mangat, Vaneeka Dadhria, Adrian Der Gregorian, Tom Edden, Eben Figueiredo, Jon Furlong, Tazmyn-May Gebbett, Carla Harrison-Hodge, Mika Onyx Johnson, Joseph Langdon, Sophie Mercell, Evelyn Miller, Nima Taleghani, and Brinsley Terence.
The well-known story of Cyrano, which follows the poet-warrior with a large nose and the love triangle he becomes involved in, was originally written by Edmond Rostand. Crimp has adapted the story into a rap battle-meets-slam poetry style, stripping back the 1897 verse drama into a more modern form. The adaptation premiered at London's Playhouse Theatre and won the 2020 Olivier Award for Best Revival and earned four additional Olivier Award nominations, including Best Actor and Best Director.

“This production is a visceral, bold, and wholly exciting take on a classic," said BAM Artistic Director David Binder in a statement. "I’m thrilled to welcome Jamie Lloyd and James McAvoy to BAM this spring and look forward to sharing this one of a kind experience with our audiences.” The production, finally arrives at BAM after its originally slated run for spring 2020 prior to the pandemic was delayed.
Featured on the creative team are set and costume designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer Jon Clark, associate lighting designer Hector Murray, costume supervisor Anna Josephs, props supervisor Lily Molgaard, associate director Rupert Hands, assistant director Nari Blair-Mangat, and associate designer Rachel Wingate. Sound and compositions are by Ben and Max Ringham, fight movement is by Kate Waters, and additional movement is by Polly Bennett. Casting is by Stuart Burt.
