MCC Theater has unveiled its inaugural Judith Champion PlayLabs Reading Series, which features a collection of new plays written by playwrights Justice Hehir, Sam Mueller, and Dhari Noel.
The readings will take place over a series of three weeks in May, beginning with Hehir’s My Love My Love, directed by Joan Sergay, May 4. The play follows two former acting class scene partners: Eric, who is currently performing in Pittsburgh community theatre, and Jane, who has since passed away.
Noel’s Is Cry You Cry’n?, directed by Marissa Joyce Stamps, premieres May 11. Is Cry You Cry’n? follows two unique stories that take place in the same basement. A green-card wedding and a fraternity pledge meeting both address themes of identity, time, and belonging.
Rounding out the series is Mueller’s At The Confluence of Creeks, which premieres May 18 and follows Caleb, who is invited back to his family’s hunting cabin for the first time since coming out as trans. His estranged brother, Cain, wants to take him out hunting for bighorn sheep, but little do the brothers know that they might be the ones being hunted. “A play that asks just how much weight an olive branch can withstand,” reads a press statement.
“Judith Champion’s belief in adventurous, writer-driven theater has already shaped a crucial ecosystem of new work development across the city,” Co-Artistic Director Will Cantler shared in a press statement. “Bernie and I are proud to be joining our peers in carrying that spirit forward at MCC. Her legacy is a reminder that investing in emerging voices changes the field, and we’re grateful to Mel Litoff for making it possible for these writers to take a bold next step with us and share their words out loud.”
All three readings will take place in MCC Theater’s Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater and will be free to the public. Casting will be announced closer to each presentation.
