Casting has been unveiled for the upcoming Off-Broadway bow of Elizabeth Barkan's Bike Shop The Musical, set to begin at Theater for the New City April 30. Opening night will be May 4, with the run continuing through May 17.
The musical features a book and lyrics by Barkan and Caroline Murphy, music and scoring by Youn-Young Park, and additional music by Gerry Dieffenbach and Murphy. The work centers on a female bike messenger who, after a life-changing traumatic accident, works to fix and restore bikes as her penance. Barkan first developed the work as a solo show, and has now turned it into a full-length musical.
Barkan will lead the cast as Bobby, opposite David Edwards (The Producers) as Jack, Jeff McCarthy (Urinetown) as Frank, Madeleine Doherty (Les Misérables) as Aunt Jane, and Joe Symon (Swingtime Canteen) as Uncle Bernie.
Gretchen Cryer is directing, with music supervision by Timothy Splain and music direction by Michael O'Dell. The production will also feature scenic design by Mark Marcante, lighting design by Alexander Bartenieff, and costume and prop design by TNC. Leila Wright will serve as stage manager.
