Carol Burnett has joined the cast of the upcoming Apple Original series Mrs. American Pie. The 10-episode series, created by Abe Sylvia and based on a novel by Juliet McDaniel, has a star-studded ensemble cast including Kristen Wiig, two-time Tony nominee Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas, and Ricky Martin.
The Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe winner, known for her long-running variety series The Carol Burnett Show, made her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress in 1959, originating the role Princess Winnifred. She received a Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for the role. She was nominated again, three decades later, for starring in Moon Over Buffalo in 1995.
Set in the early 1970s, the comedy will be directed by Tate Taylor and follows Maxine Simmons’ attempt to secure her seat at the elusive Palm Beach high society. Burnett will play Norma, the grande dame of Palm Beach high society.
The project was developed and will be executive produced by Dern, who is in line for a key role, and her producing partner Jayme Lemons. Additional executive producers include Katie O’Connell Marsh, showrunner Sylvia, director Taylor, and John Norris.
