The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri has announced the trio of actors that will lead its upcoming production of Sweeney Todd. Originally scheduled as part of the theatre's 2020 season but then delayed to 2021 and subsequently 2022, the show will finally make its Muny premiere July 16-22.
Starring in the cast will be Broadway veterans Ben Davis as Sweeney Todd, Carmen Cusack as Mrs. Lovett, and Robert Cuccioli as Judge Turpin. Additional casting has yet to be announced. The theatre shared the news on Instagram.
Cusack most recently starred on Broadway in Flying Over Sunset. Davis and Cuccioli both made their Broadway debuts in the original production of Les Misérables.
Rob Ruggiero is set to direct the production which will feature associate direction and musical staging by Jessica Hartman, and music direction by James Moore. Michael Horsley will serve as associate music director. Sweeney Todd features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1979, earning nine Tony Award nominations and winning eight.
