Freak the Mighty Musical Will Make World Premiere at Seattle Rep

Based on Rodman Philbrick's novel, Ryan Fielding Garrett's new musical features a book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe.

New musical Freak the Mighty will make its world premiere this summer at Seattle Rep, running July 30-September 6 at the Bagley Wright Theater. The company's newly announced 2026-2027 season will also include five productions built by Seattle Rep, and the regional premiere of two recent Tony-winning hits.

Based on Rodman Philbrick's novel, Freak the Mighty will feature music by Ryan Fielding Garrett, a book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe (HonkMary Poppins), and choreography by Patrick McCollum. The musical follows the adventures of two unlikely young friends, Maxwell Kane and Kevin “Freak” Avery. Though Maxwell and Kevin feel like outsiders, together they transform into “Freak The Mighty,” a heroic duo empowered to take on the world. Side by side, they navigate obstacles both real and imagined, discovering that even the toughest challenges feel lighter when carried together. Michael Barakiva will direct the production, a co-production with Cleveland Play House, Michael Barakiva will direct.

The Washington state company's season will also include the arrival of Jonathan Spector's Tony Award-winning play Eureka Dayrunning September 24-November 15, and Kimberly Belflower's Tony Award-winning hit John Proctor is the Villainrunning January 21–February 21, 2027, as well as a number of new works.
