A revised version of I & You: The Musical, which played New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center this past fall, will arrive at Maryland's Olney Theatre Center's Roberts Mainstage April 22.
The co-production with the McCarter, by special arrangement with Alchemation, will continue through May 24. Sarah Rasmussen will again direct.
The two-person musical will feature J. Antonio Rodriguez (Hadestown) as Anthony and Alex De Bard (Frozen) as Caroline. Understudies are Alexandra Lopez and Kishan Rao.
Based on Lauren M. Gunderson’s play I and You, the musical features a book by Gunderson and music and lyrics by Ari Afsar. The musical follows Caroline, who is stuck at home with a chronic illness and is surprised by a visit from Anthony, armed with a class project. As the two get to know each other, they learn of the deeper mystery that brought them together.
The creative team from the McCarter will reunite with director Rasmussen for the Olney mounting, including movement director Steph Paul, original music director Sujin Kim-Ramsey, music supervisor Bryan Perri, scenic designer Beowulf Borrit, costume designer Kara Harmon, lighting designer Japhy Weideman, sound designer Elisabeth Weidner, projection designer Stefania Bulbarella, hair, wig, and makeup designer Kate Casalino, dramaturg Julie Felise Dubiner, voice and text director Hannah Tamminen, and intimacy coordinator Alicia Rodis.
Orchestrations are by Yair Evnine and Afsar, with arrangements by Sujin Kim-Ramsey and Afsar. The production stage manager is Becky Reed, and the assistant stage manager is Allison Ann Bailey.
I & You: The Musical was commissioned by the McCarter with support from the BOLD Foundation and developed in the Emily Mann Lab.
