Detroit Public Theatre's 2022-2023 season includes works by Tony nominee Dominique Morisseau and Heather Raffo, and will mark the first season in the theatre company's new venue at 3960 Third Ave.

"This is an incredible moment for Detroit Public Theatre. We cannot wait to open the doors of DPT’s new home in Detroit’s cultural district," says Producing Artistic Director Courtney Burkett. "We look forward to welcoming audiences and amplifying the voices of inspiring artists as we share stories that help us to make sense of the moment we are living through together."

The season will kick off with Morisseau's Mud Row. The play will be directed by Lamar Perry and follows two sisters reckoning with their shared heritage after one of them inherits their grandmother’s house. The show will run September 21–October 30, with opening night set for September 23.

Noura by Heather Raffo and directed by Mike Mosallam will follow. The work explores motherhood and marriage as Noura and her family plan the perfect Christmas dinner to celebrate their new life in New York. They are shaken up by the arrival of a visitor. Noura will play November 16–December 18, with opening night set for November 18.

The new year will open with The Peculiar Patriot by Liza Jessie Peterson, who also serves as the solo performer, under the direction of Talvin Wilks. The show will begin February 8, 2023 with opening night set for February 10, 2023. The run will continue through March 5, 2023. Peterson's work follows LaQuanda ‘Betsy’ Ross and her journey educating herself and the audience on systemic inequity within America’s prison complex system.

Wrapping up the season is Passing Strange with lyrics and a book by the musician Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew. Directed by John Sloan III, the musical will play April 19–May 21, 2023 with opening night set for April 21. The story showcases a young bohemian who seeks “the real” through sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Past premieres at the Detroit Public Theatre include Noah Haidle's Birthday Candles (recently seen on Broadway starring Debra Messing) and Dominique Morisseau’s Detroit Cycle, including her latest Broadway work Skeleton Crew.
