Broadway-aimed musical Female Troubles takes the stage at New Hope, Pennsylvania's Bucks County Playhouse June 18 at 7:30 PM. The concert presentation, part of the theatre's sixth annual Oscar Hammerstein Festival, features lyrics by 2022 Tony nominee Amanda Green (Mr. Saturday Night), music by Emmy nominee Curtis Moore (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and a book by Jennifer Crittenden (Seinfeld) and Gabrielle Allan (Veep).
The comedic work, set in 19th-century England, centers on Elinor Benton and her lady's maid who both find themselves unwed and pregnant. The cast features Olivier nominee and BCP alum Lesli Margherita.
“We are very excited that the Playhouse is playing an integral part in developing this very funny and timely musical," says Playhouse Executive Producer Robyn Goodman. "And its writing team is at the top of their game.” Goodman will also interview Green and Moore about the process of developing a new musical for Broadway.
Named in honor of the Broadway playwright and lyricist behind such musicals as Show Boat, Oklahoma!, South Pacific, and The Sound of Music, the Oscar Hammerstein Festival celebrates and honors the importance of lyrics in the creation of new musicals. Also scheduled for this year's festival is a private presentation from writers in Roundabout Theatre Company's Space Jam program, the culmination of a partnership that sees the Pennsylvania theatre giving two teams of composers and lyricists an artistic writing retreat.
The presentation will be open to the public, with tickets available at BucksCountyPlayhouse.org.
