Syracuse Stage has partnered with the League of Live Stream Theater to present their world premiere production of Relentless by Rae Binstock to audiences worldwide. The production will stream as a scheduled digital event, with fixed showtimes throughout the show’s final week, February 19–22.
Directed by Melissa Crespo, Relentless is produced in collaboration with Sing Out, Louise! Productions.
The play centers on two unlikely allies: Monique Jeffries, a boxer who was supposed to be one of the greats before a brutal knockout forced her into early retirement, and Matt, an investment banker with a vision to transform the boxing gym Monique manages into an elite training facility.
Binstock, an amateur boxer, worked the front desk at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn and quickly found a home away from home amongst the trainers and fighters. Relentless is her love letter to the oldest boxing gym in the country, which served as an inspiration for Bailey’s.
The production stars Rebecca S'manga Frank as Monique, Jeorge Bennett Watson as Johnny, and Stephen Michael Spencer as Matt. They are supported by David Harrison Pralgo as Johnny’s new protege Wookie, Caylie Filipa as Bailey’s fledgling hire Bex, and Sean Patrick Reilly as Chicken, an old-school Polish trainer who spends his days parked in a ringside recliner.
The creative team includes scenic designer Ann Beyersdorfer, costume designer Lux Haac, lighting designer Jess Creager, sound designer Daniela Hart for Uptown Works, and fight choreographer Teniece Divya Johnson. The production stage manager is Fran Acuña-Almiron. The community partners for Relentless are the Falk College of Sport at Syracuse University and Prime Time Boxing.
