Kween, a new play from Vichet Chum, will make its world premiere at Lowell, Massachusetts' Merrimack Repertory Theatre February 25-March 15. Pirronne Yousefzadeh is directing.
The work, a Merrimack commission, follows Soma, a queer Cambodian-American teenager whose video of original poetry about her father's deportation goes viral. The cast will include Pichanny Som as Soma, Ray K. Soeun as Sophat, Pisay Pao as Dahvy, Alfredo Antillon, and Brittani J. McBride as Britney.
The production will also feature scenic design by Cristina Todesco, costume design by Yao Chen, lighting design by Brian J. Lilienthal, projection design by Camilla Tassi, and sound design by David Remedios.
Chum's works—which include Bald Sisters, High School Play: A Nostalgia Fest, Knyum, Go, Liebling, and The Boy Luck Club—have been workshopped and produced at Steppenwolf Theatre, Alley Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, Ars Nova, Page 73, Chautauqua Theater Company, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Cleveland Play House, Weston Playhouse, and more.
