Katie Holmes is starring in the title role of The Old Globe's new production of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, opening at the San Diego theatre February 12. Get a first look at the stage and screen star in the production in the gallery below.
The project reunites Holmes with Barry Edelstein, Old Globe's artistic director who is staging the revival. The two previously worked on Off-Broadway's The Wanderers in 2023.
Ibsen's classic, about a woman whose world begins to crack just after her honeymoon, has been reimagined by Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary, The Girl on the Train), in an Old Globe–commissioned new adaptation.
The production also features Celeste Arias as Thea Elvsted, Charlie Barnett as George Tesman, Saidah Arrika Ekulona as Aunt Julie Tesman, Alexander Hurt as Ejlert Lövborg, Katie MacNichol as Berte, Alfredo Narciso as Judge Black, and Korrie Yamaoka as Pianist. Understudies Lance D. Bush, Thomas Edward Daugherty, Ethan Fox, Stephanie Hinck, Fiona Robberson, Sonya Schumann, and Shana Wride round out the company. Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting.

“Hedda Gabler is one of the landmark works of world drama and I’m truly thrilled to bring a bracing new take on it to the Globe,” said Edelstein in an earlier statement. “Hedda, like Hamlet, rises or falls with the actor in the title role. She’s everything: victim, tyrant, femme fatale; funny, scathing, tragic. Only an actor with immense imagination and charisma can take on Hedda Gabler, and in Katie’s radiant and powerful performance, Globe audiences are going to witness something rare and special. She’s an artist at the height of her powers and we’re lucky to have her in San Diego. This is going to be a memorable moment at The Old Globe, and I can’t wait to share it.”
The production features scenic design by Mark Wendland, costume design by David I. Reynoso, lighting design by Heather Gilbert, sound design by Jessica Paz, original music by Caroline Shaw, and movement by Chelsey Arce. Jess Slocum is the production stage manager with Kendra Stockton serving as assistant stage manager.
