Maine's Ogunquit Playhouse has added Beautiful: The Carole King Musical to its 2022 season, with a run set for September 15–October 30. The production will be the jukebox biomusical's regional premiere. Cast and creative team will be announced in the coming weeks.
The production replaces the previously announced production of Clue, which has been moved to the theatre's 2023 season. Carson Kressley (RuPaul's Drag Race) and Sally Struthers (Ogunquit's Young Frankenstein) are expected to star in the play adapted from the cult classic film.
Telling the story of Carole King's remarkable rise to stardom, Beautiful features a score comprising some of King's greatest hits along with songs by King's working partners Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, including "I Feel the Earth Move," "One Fine Day," "Natural Woman," and more. With a book by Douglas McGrath, the jukebox musical premiered on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in 2014, with original star Jessie Mueller winning a Best Leading Actress in a Musical Tony Award for her performance as King. The musical has since played London's West End and tours of the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
With The Cher Show currently on its stage through June 25, Ogunquit's 2022 season is also set to include runs of The Nutty Professor and Mr. Holland's Opus.
