Hirschfeld’s Broadway, a new multi-media presentation illustrating classic moments in the American theatre, as drawn by late caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, will make its world premiere at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania, September 28 at 7:30 PM.
Hosted by Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold, the evening will feature backstage stories of Hirschfeld’s interactions with theatre legends, nine decades of the late artist's drawings, and searches for the hidden “Ninas."
From a rehearsal of On the Town to Hairspray's opening night, audiences will see Broadway productions of Hello, Dolly!, Fiddler on the Roof, Funny Girl, Cabaret, Annie, Sweeney Todd, Cats, Les Misérables, Fences, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Rent through the pen of Hirschfeld.
Following the performance, the Al Hirschfeld Foundation and Bucks County Playhouse will present a gallery of his artwork.
Hirschfeld began theatrical drawing in 1926 and went on to capture treasured moments in the history of American theatre and the American theatre experience. He attended the 1939 opening of Bucks County Playhouse and documented the night.
