Based on the novel by Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer, the new musical follows Delilah, an outsider in a new school who seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood. Soon, the lines between reality and fantasy begin to blur, and she has to confront whether she has the power to rewrite her own story. The musical had its world premiere in 2017 at Kansas City Rep, which was followed by a concert presentation at NYC's 92Y.
The work features a book by Timothy Allen McDonald (Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) and a score by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson (Central Park). Two-time Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) will direct, with choreography by Paul McGill (The Legend of Georgia McBride), orchestrations and arrangements by Tony nominee Gregory Rassen (Bandstand), music direction by Daniel Green (Almost Famous), scenic design by Tony nominee Tobin Ost (Newsies), costume design by two-time Tony winner Gregg Barnes (Mean Girls), lighting design by Jason Lyons (Rock of Ages), sound design by Ken Travis (Aladdin), projection design by Caite Hevner (In Transit), and hair and makeup design by J. Jared Janas (Jagged Little Pill).
Between the Lines is co-produced by Elizabeth Armstrong, Andrew Paradis, Sullivan Entertainment, and Tom Tuft.
