Casting and creative team information has been revealed for the SoHo Rep and INTAR production of César Alvarez's The Potluck, running in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons June 30-July 26.
Directed by Sarah Benson, the new musical featuring a 12-person intergenerational cast began as a commission to write a musical about the Greensboro Massacre, but it turned into a show about ghosts, capitalism, and how to recuperate from trauma that happened to you before you were even born.
The cast will include Anthony Alfaro as César, El Beh as Jaime, Jacob Brandt as Jim, Andrew R. Butler as Bill, Sammy Figueroa on Percussion, Rubén Flores as Dad, Dionne McClain-Freeney as Sandi, Jessica Lurie on saxophone and flute, Gían Pérez as Cesar, Zack Segel as Mike, and Tony nominee Barbara Walsh as Mom.
The Potluck has united Alvarez and multiple members of their family in collaboration, including their partner, artist Emily Orling—the production's scenic designer and spiritual advisor—and Alvarez's sister, choreographer, Ana Maria Alvarez. The creative team also includes music director Alex Bechtel, costume designer Qween Jean, lighting designer Mextly Couzin, sound designer Eamon Goodman, video designer Stefania Bulbarella, associate scenic designer Randy Wong-Westbrooke, props supervisor Maria Feuereisen, associate director Dante Green, and associate music director McClain-Freeney. Casting is by Taylor Williams. The production stage manager is Lay Hoon Tan.
Tickets go on sale in April.
