The Independent Reviewers of New England presented their 23rd Annual IRNE Awards April 9, honoring the best of the Greater Boston Area stages.
At the front of the pack was the pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of Moulin Rouge!, which topped the list with seven wins including Best Musical – Large Stage. As previously reported, the production earned 12 total nominations. The production, set to open at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre this summer, reopened Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre last fall.
In addition to both Best Musical and Best New Musical, the stage adaptation of the Baz Luhrmann favorite took home Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Danny Burstein, Best Music Director for Cian McCarthy, Best Set Design for Derek McLane, Best Costume Design for Catherine Zuber, and Best Sound Design for Peter Hylenski.
Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company was the most awarded regional company, winning ten categories including Best New Play for Eleanor Burgess’ The Niceties and Best Director of a Play for Michael Greif.Additional winners included the national tour of Hamilton and the production’s current Eliza, Hannah Cruz; Tony nominee John Douglas Thompson for Huntington’s Man in the Ring; and Lauren Patten for her performance in the American Repertory Theater production of the Broadway-bound Jagged Little Pill.
