Marc Bruni (The Great GatsbyBeautiful) has newly been named the director of the upcoming world premiere musical Iceboy! Or, The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write The Iceman Cometh at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, with performances set to run June 9-July 19, 2026, in the company's Albert Theatre. Bruni is replacing previously announced director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall, who has departed the production due to scheduling issues.

The new musical—with music by Mark Hollman (Urinetown), lyrics by Hollman and Jay Reiss (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and a book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Reiss—is set to star Megan Mullally. Further casting and creative team members are to be announced.

"After spending last summer on Navy Pier, I can't wait to return to Chicago this year and collaborate with the incomparable Megan Mullally in sharing this hilarious brand new musical with O'Neill-savvy Goodman audiences," says Bruni in a statement. The gig will bring Bruni back to Chicago after directing The Sound of Music at Lyric Opera, Trevor at Writers Theatre, and Old Jews Telling Jokes at Royal George.

The new musical will see Mullally becoming Broadway star Vera Vimm, who adopts a 40,000 year-old Neanderthal from the Arctic only to reel when he begins stealing the spotlight.
