"Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?" We can. This fall all you have to do is walk west on 42nd from Times Square to Theatre Row, where the new stage production: Sesame Street: The Musical will be making its world premiere. Previews for the Off-Broadway show from Rockefeller Productions and Sesame Workshop will begin September 8 for a limited run through November 27. Opening night is set for September 22.
The new musical will feature beloved Sesame Street characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, Grover, Rosita, Bert, Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, The Count, and more—in their original puppet forms—alongside Broadway guest stars singing both classic songs from the long-running television series as well as new songs written for the production by current Broadway songwriters.
Jonathan Rockefeller, whose company has brought recent stagings of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation (returning Off-Broadway June 18), Paddington Gets in a Jam, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, will direct.
Now in its 53rd television season, Sesame Street first aired in the U.S. in 1969. The educational entertainment is now seen in 150 countries worldwide and has been honored with 11 Grammys and 214 Emmys, more than
any other children’s show.
“As the world begins to open up, families and fans are looking forward to live, high-quality, in-person experiences with their favorite brands, and Sesame Workshop is answering the call with the expansion of our themed entertainment offerings,” said Jennifer Ahearn of Sesame Workshop. “With its critically-acclaimed productions and keen eye for presenting beloved stories, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Rockefeller Productions on a stage show that will have the young and young-at-heart singing, dancing, and celebrating with their Sesame Street friends.”
Creative staff, special celebrity guests, and other information will be announced later.
