The US premiere of the Ivo van Hove-directed A Little Life will run Off-Broadway at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House Oct 20-29 as part of the Next Wave 2022 festival.
Based on the best-selling novel by Hanya Yanagihara and adapted by Koen Tachelet, the play explores the complex relationships between four friends—a lawyer, an actor, an architect, and an artist—over the course of three decades. Under Hove's direction, the show will follow them from college into their middle-age lives in New York City.
A Little Life will be presented in German with English subtitles, with translation by Kitty Pouwels and Josephine Ruitenberg. Tickets go on sale June 9 for members and patrons, and will open to the public June 23.
Van Hove's creative team includes dramaturgy by Bart Van den Eynde, scenography and lighting design by Jan Versweyveld, music and sound design by Eric Sleichim, and costume design by An D’Huys. The show is produced by Schaubühne Berlin in co-production with Festival Athens and Festival d'Avignon.
The Tony Award-winning director first premiered A Little Life at Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg as the 2018-2019 season opener for Netherlands repertory company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, where van Hove has served as artistic director since 2001.
