Sondheim proved a hot ticket last week on Broadway, with Into the Woods continuing to pack in theatregoers and pulling in nearly $2 million at the box office at the St. James. Over at the Bernard B. Jacobs, Sondheim's Company, set to complete its Broadway run July 31, made over $1 million and very nearly sold out, filling 99.29% of its house.
The top earners of this cycle were no surprise, with The Music Man continuing to dominate with another week bringing in more than $3 million and an average ticket price of $248.27, nearly $40 more than Hamilton's second-highest average ticket price of $211.42. Disney's The Lion King, which played nine performances last week, took the number two slot with $2.43 million, while Hamilton was next with $2.25 million.
Overall, Broadway is doing a fantastic job filling seats, with 89.04% of seats filled cumulatively—14 of 25 currently running productions played to 90% or higher capacity. Total grosses got dangerously near $30 million with an increase of more than $500,000 from last week despite one less show.
