Broadway Remains Shut Down Monday Night as Blizzard Continues

The blizzard shutdown has now been extended into its second day, with Chicago, Every Brilliant Thing, and more cancelling.

Broadway theatre owners and producers have extended the Broadway blizzard shutdown and cancelled all performances February 23. While the majority of shows plan to be dark weekly on Mondays, a number of shows—including ChicagoEvery Brilliant ThingThe Great GatsbyHarry Potter and the Cursed Child, and SIX: The Musical—had been scheduled to perform this evening.

A statement from The Broadway League directs those with tickets for now cancelled performances to contact their point of purchase for remedies. The statement attributed the cancellations due to the "continuing impacts from the blizzard and local travel restrictions still in place." Over two feet of snow have been reported in New York City and its surrounding areas.

To make up for its cancelled Monday performance, Chicago announced it would add a Thursday matinee on March 5 at 2 PM.

That makes this a now two-day shutdown as a blizzard continues to pummel New York City and the surrounding areas. Matinees performed mostly as scheduled February 22, but all evening shows were cancelled as the heavy snowstorm descended upon the area.

Playbill will edit this story as it develops.

This preemptive move is a welcome change from last month's major snowstorm in New York, which saw individual Broadway shows choosing to cancel their January 25 performances, in some cases as audiences were coming into the theatre. For that storm, 10 shows cancelled their performances.

The last time the Broadway League made the decision to mass cancel shows was January 2016, when a major blizzard led to an officially declared winter weather emergency and a hazardous travel advisory, leading the League to shut down all of Broadway the evening of January 23, the peak of the storm.

If more show cancellations come in, you will find them reported here at Playbill and on our social media channels. Shows will post about them on their own social handles as well.
