New York City is currently under a blizzard warning, as one-to-two feet of snow is expected to fall beginning Sunday morning February 22, and into February 23. In the face of warnings of whiteout conditions and officials urging New Yorkers to limit travel during the snowstorm, the Broadway League has announced that all Sunday evening shows are cancelled, including the final performance of the original Broadway cast of Operation Mincemeat.
In a statement, the League wrote: "Due to anticipated travel impacts from the impending blizzard and evening travel bans already announced for our surrounding areas, Broadway theatre owners and producers have come to the consensus that evening performances (curtain times at 6pm or later) tonight (Sunday, February 22) will be cancelled.
The League said matinees will continue on as planned.
The affected shows include the evening performances of & Juliet, All Out: Comedy About Ambition, The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Oh, Mary!, Operation Mincemeat, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and Wicked.
Operation Mincemeat had previously not made a decision on whether to cancel their evening show, due to it being the final performance of the original Broadway cast. But two hours after the League made its announcement, the show's Instagram page said that due to "dastardly weather," Sunday's 7:30 performance was cancelled. The 2 PM matinee will now be the official final performance of the original Broadway cast.
Off-Broadway, BIGFOOT!, Burnout Paradise, Data, and You Got Older have cancelled their Sunday performances.
Playbill will edit this story as it develops.
Ticket buyers can contact their point of purchase for refunds.
Some shows that are doing matinee performances are also operating a snow sale. Manhattan Theatre Club announced that remaining tickets to its 2 PM matinee of Bug on Broadway starring Carrie Coon will be sold for $45; tickets for its 2:30 PM matinee of The Monsters Off-Broadway will be sold for $39.
This preemptive move is a welcome change from last month's major snowstorm in New York, which saw individual Broadway shows choosing to cancel their January 25 performances, in some cases as audiences were coming into the theatre. For that storm, 10 shows cancelled their performances.
The last time the Broadway League made the decision to mass cancel shows was January 2016, when a major blizzard led to an officially declared winter weather emergency and a hazardous travel advisory, leading the League to shut down all of Broadway the evening of January 23, the peak of the storm.
If more show cancellations come in, you will find them reported here at Playbill and on our social media channels. Shows will post about them on their own social handles, too. And as far as any tickets you might already have in hand, you should expect to hear from your point of purchase about cancellation news and next steps on getting a refund. If you would like to exchange your February 22 tickets, please contact your point of purchase.
There's potential for a silver lining, too, if you're already in the city. When such events befall Broadway, producers often create special deals for any New Yorkers or visitors brave enough to venture out into the storm and take in a show—a way of filling seats as the bridge-and-tunnel crowd and out-of-state tourists' seats might be left empty. Playbill will update this story with more promos so it's worth keeping an eye out for especially good opportunities to save a buck.
Nothing is more important than your safety and health. So no matter what you're up to this weekend, make sure you bundle up, wear warm shoes with good traction, and be safe!
