The Roundabout Underground production of Exception to the Rule by Dave Harris wraps up its world premiere run June 26 at Roundabout's Black Box Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center. Previews for the limited engagement began April 28, with an official opening May 18. Roundabout Resident Director Miranda Haymon helms the production.

The play centers on six Black students stuck together, fighting and flirting their way through detention at the worst school in the city. The ensemble cast includes MaYaa Boateng, Malik Childs, Mister Fitzgerald, Toney Goins, Amandla Jahava, and Claudia Logan.

Exception to the Rule features sets by Reid Thompson and Kamil James, costumes by Sarita Fellows, lighting by Cha See, and sound by Lee Kinney.

Harris was Roundabout’s 2020–21 Tow Foundation Playwright in Residence. His play Tambo & Bones ran earlier this season at Playwrights Horizons and will made its West Coast premiere at Center Theatre Group in May.
