The show is inspired by the real-life stories of African Americans who escaped bondage by going south into Mexico. Creators Robinson and Quijada also play all the characters in the show, and play all the music—with the help of a looping station that allows them to create the arrangements for every song in the show live in front of the audience every night. The Off-Broadway bow follows hit runs in Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; and Berkeley, California.
