Bedlam has revealed the cast for its upcoming production William Shakespeare’s Othello.

Directed by Eric Tucker, the production will feature four actors inhabiting the 19 roles of Othello, distilling the play down to its essence. The piece will play Off-Broadway's West End Theatre April 19-May 31.

Said Tucker, "The more I consider Othello, the less I think it’s a play about, as many will say, 'jealousy.' It’s about racism. And on top of that, it’s also an extremely racist play. Other title figures in Shakespeare like Hamlet and Macbeth get to soliloquize to the audience; they have a whole relationship with them, and the audience ends up experiencing the story through their eyes. In Othello, Iago speaks to and works his charms on the audience. We’re considering what this means and how to challenge that relationship—and instead approach the production through Othello’s eyes. Having a small cast also lends itself to greater listening. People listen to these plays differently when there are fewer actors and they are necessarily required to lean in and pay close attention."

The Bedlam production will star Susannah Hoffman (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rogue Hostage), Susannah Millonzi (The Crucible, Uncle Romeo Vanya Juliet), Ryan Quinn (Hedda Gabler, The Crucible), and Tucker (The Winter’s Tale/Hedda Gabler, The Crucible).

The creative team will include associate Caitlin Morley, assistant director Maya Shore, costume designer Sam Debell, and lighting designer Cheyenne Sykes. Tucker will deliver sound design in addition to his direction. Ana Muñoz is the production stage manager, and Genevieve Dornemann is the assistant stage manager.
