Three-time Tony honoree Chita Rivera will announce the nominees for the 2022 Chita Rivera Awards—celebrating dance and choreographic excellence—May 17 at 11:30 AM ET on WNBC’s NewYorkLive.
The Chita Rivera Awards will be held June 20 at 7:30 PM at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The evening is produced by Joe Lanteri, founder and executive director of the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation, in conjunction with Patricia Watt.
The awards celebrate dance and choreographic excellence—past, present, and future. Nominators consider outstanding choreography, featured dancers, and ensembles in shows on and Off-Broadway as well as outstanding choreography in film; eligible works opened pre-COVID and during the 2021-2022 season. There are separate nominating committees for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and film; there is also an awarding committee for Broadway, which determines the final nominations received from the Broadway nominations committee.
Through education and scholarships, the awards are also committed to nurturing future generations and preserving notable dance history.
Tony, Oscar, and Golden Globe Award winner Joel Grey, as previously reported, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Winners of the Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theater Award and Ambassador for the Arts Award will be announced in the coming weeks.
The awards will benefit The NYC Dance Alliance Foundation College Scholarship Program. Since the inception of the foundation, $4 million has been awarded to over 400 dancers represented in 42 college dance programs in the country.
Jessie Mueller, Ellen Burstyn, Bonnie Milligan, Stephen Schwartz, and more were part of the evening honoring Buckley with the ASA's Lifetime Achievement Award.
