Playwright Alex Lin has been chosen by Colt Coeur, in partnership with Shea Theatricals, to receive the inaugural Beacon Commission, a new program aimed at supporting new plays by woman and non-binary artists that combat the erasure of history. The commission will be for Lin's play The Translator, with the honor including an artist fee, two workshops, a public reading, and support collaboration from a director, actors, and a designer.

The work is inspired by the true story of Tye Leung, the first Chinese-American woman to vote in a U.S. election. Lin is collaborating with director Cara Hinh on the project.

The commission was created partially in response to the Trump administration's attempt to re-write history in American museums, with many exhibits addressing historical accounts of racism and sexism coming under federal scrutiny. Colt Coeur and Shea hope the program will help counteract those efforts.

Along with writing for TV's The Audacity, Lin has had work produced and developed at such companies as Roundabout Theatre Company, Second Stage, New York Theatre Workshop, Manhattan Theatre Club, and more.
