Tony nominee and Emmy winner Colman Domingo hosted a Juicy Disco at Broadway's Fat Ham April 1 to celebrate the James Ijames' Broadway premiere. Currently in previews at the American Airlines Theatre where it will open April 12, Fat Ham plays a strictly limited engagement.
The event featured a 3D skull-turned-booth, themed cocktails, Southern barbeque, and a playlist curated by DJ Lina Bradford. The disco sound and cookout-style food were appropriately picked as Ijames' reinvention of Shakespeare's classic tragedy Hamlet features both. Set at a Southern cookout, queer college kid Juicy has to grapple with identity questions, the ghost of his father, and a supernatural demand for vengeance. His choice? Whether to break or perpetuate cycles of trauma and violence.
Domingo also serves as a producer of the play's Broadway production which is the first National Black Theatre production (co-produced by The Public Theater) to transfer to Broadway. The run has announced a series of community events and affinity nights.
