Broadway's upcoming revival of Arthur Miller's Pulitzer-winning Death of a Salesman has added eight weeks to its run, which will now continue through August 9. Previews begin March 6, with an official opening set for April 9 at the Winter Garden. See the first principal cast photo below.
As previously announced, the cast will be led by Nathan Lane as Willy Loman and Laurie Metcalf as Linda Loman, opposite Christopher Abbott as Biff Loman, Ben Ahlers as Happy Loman, K. Todd Freeman as Charley, Jonathan Cake as Ben Loman, John Drea as Howard, Michael Benjamin Washington as Bernard, Tasha Lawrence as The Woman, Jake Silbermann as Stanley, Joaquin Consuelos, Jake Termine, Karl Green, and Jack Falahee. Newly announced to be completing the cast are Katherine Romans as Miss Forsythe, Mary Neely as Letta, Aidan Cazeau, Charlie Niccolini, Alexis Bronkovic, Erik Kilpatrick, and Brendan Donaldson.
Under the direction of Joe Mantello, the staging will feature movement direction by Sasha Milavic Davies, music by Caroline Shaw, scenic design by Chloe Lamford, costume design by Rudy Mance, lighting design by Jack Knowles, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, and hair and wig design by Robert Pickens.
Scott Rudin and Barry Diller are producing, the duo's sophomore outing after Rudin's controversial return to the industry following allegations of abusive treatment to subordinates. Roy Furman is also producing.
The work, which explores the dark realities of the so-called "American Dream" for the middle class of the mid-century, premiered on Broadway in 1949, winning the Pulitzer and Tony and becoming a near instant stage classic. The play has since been revived on Broadway five times with various stars taking on the ill-fated Willy Loman, including George C. Scott, Dustin Hoffman, Brian Dennehy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Wendell Pierce.
“This production promises to channel Salesman's dynamic power in a completely new way," says Kate Miller, trustee of the Arthur Miller Trust in a statement. "Part of what's so exciting about Joe Mantello’s approach is that he has been immersing himself in our extensive archives and interacting with Arthur's earliest drafts of Salesman, sounding out a deeper understanding of the play's inner workings. It's been wonderful to work with someone who is successfully finding new ways into a play that's been thoroughly studied, taught, and performed by the greatest artists in the world for nearly eighty years. Mantello’s approach will bring Salesman’s impactful and ever relevant commentary on the American dream to modern audiences, and we're so eager to see it come to life."
