Massachusetts' Provincetown Theater has announced Craig Lucas, Chisa Hutchinson, and Ryan J. Haddad will be honored with its American Playwright Awards. The three playwrights will receive their awards at the theatre's annual summer fundraiser, set for August 13 at the Provincetown Inn.
Lucas, a three-time Tony nominee, will take home the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his work, which includes plays Prelude to a Kiss and Reckless. As a librettist, his Broadway credits include Light in the Piazza (recently revived by New York City Center Encores!), An American in Paris, and Days of Wine and Roses.
The Inspiration Award this year will be given to Hutchinson. Her plays, which examine race and gender in America, have graced Off-Broadway stages, including Atlantic Theater Company, Rattlestick Playwrights' Theater, The Wild Project, Second Stage, and others. Her work has been recognized previously with a GLADD Media Award and a Lilly Award.
Receiving the Trailblazer Award will be playwright and performer Haddad. He wrote the autobiographical solo show Hi, Are You Single?, as well as Dark Disabled Stories which ran at Off-Broadway's The Public Theater earlier this year. He has developed work at Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, Primary Stages, and Berkeley Repertory. On the TV screen, Haddad can be spotted in a recurring role in Netflix's The Politician, as well as in The Bull, Madam Secretary, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
The gala celebration will be a sit-down supper ceremony, followed by a discussion with the three playwrights about their work and American theatre today. Lucas, Hutchinson, and Haddad join the roster of previous Provincetown American Playwright Awards recipients such as Michael R. Jackson, Paula Vogel, Doug Wright, Terrence McNally, and more.
