Off-Broadway's upcoming Kinky Boots, set to open at Stage 42 this August, teamed up with New York City's Youth Pride Chorus to sing "Everybody Say Gay," a reworked version of the show's "Everybody Say Yeah" in protest of Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill. The piece was filmed at Broadway for Arts Education's silent disco, and is available to view above.
Kinky Boots, the 2013 Tony winner for Best Musical, is returning to Off-Broadway this summer. Previews begin July 26 prior to an official opening August 25 at Stage 42.
The winner of six 2013 Tony Awards, Kinky Boots features a Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, a book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell. The production played 2,507 regular performances and 34 previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
Mitchell will again direct and choreograph. The production will star Callum Francis as Lola. Callum previously portrayed the role to great acclaim in the original London production at the Adelphi Theatre, in the Australian production, and on Broadway. Kinky Boots will also star Christian Douglas (Pretty Woman) as Charlie Price, Danielle Hope (The Wizard of Oz, Les Misérables) as Lauren, Brianna Stoute as Nicola, Sean Steele as Don, and Marcus Neville, reprising his role of George from the Broadway production.
"We are over the moon to be bringing this beloved show back to New York for audiences to feel the joy once again," said producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. "Kinky Boots has so much heart, and reminds us to be unashamedly ourselves and raise each other up, which is exactly what we need at this moment in time. We can’t wait to see fans old and new dancing, singing, and leaving the theatre with full hearts and open minds."
