Broadway songwriter Sara Bareilles (Waitress) was asked by the TV program This American Life to write an original song that imagines President Barack Obama’s thoughts about Donald Trump, the 2016 presidential campaign, and his final three months in office.
The result, titled “Seriously,” was sung by Tony Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton) and played by a five-piece band conducted by Hamilton music director Alex Lacamoire.
The song decries ”a demagogue flexing” and wonders, ”Is this the best we can be” in “these United divided States? Seriously.”
