Broadway vets Billy Porter, Sara Bareilles, and Cyndi Lauper will perform at the 31st annual MusiCares Person of the Year benefit gala honoring Joni Mitchell. The event takes place April 1 at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
Tony winners Porter and Lauper previously collaborated on the musical Kinky Boots with Lauper writing music and lyrics, and Porter originating the leading role of Lola. Tony nominee Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical Waitress, and later starred in it as well.
Other performers slated to perform at the MusiCares gala are Grammy winners Beck, Leon Bridges, Brandi Carlile, Lauren Daigle, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Angélique Kidjo, Pentatonix, Stephen Stills, and St. Vincent, as well as Jon Batiste, Black Pumas, Mickey Guyton, and Allison Russell. Graham Nash will perform remotely.
"We're excited to honor Joni together, in person, as a music community and can't wait to bring this great event to Las Vegas," shares MusiCares Executive Director Laura Segura. "We will be celebrating with a purpose, toasting one of music's greatest songwriters and musicians, while raising vital funds to address the critical health and social service needs of the music community."
Established by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, MusiCares aims to assist the artists behind music, offering preventive, emergency, and recovery programs. First awarding Person of the Year in 1991, winners have included Broadway's Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, and Carole King.
