The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced its winter and spring 2023 season, which will begin with The Tempest January 26–March 4, 2023.

Alex Kingston (MacbethER) will return to the RSC as Prospero, starring alongside Jessica Rhodes as Miranda under the direction of Elizabeth Freestone. The production reimagines the gender of Prospero to turn the play—which explores themes of power, ignorance, and healing—into one about a mother and daughter.

Following will be Julius Caesar March 18–April 8, 2023, directed by Atri Banerjee. The political tragedy will tour the U.K. following its run, with a six-woman chorus of local community leaders featured at each tour stop. Next up will be a new staging of Cymbeline helmed by Artistic Director Emeritus Gregory Doran, running April 22–May 27, 2023.

Productions of As You Like It directed by Omar Elerian and Wils Wilson's Macbeth have also been announced for the summer.

"As the RSC embarks on a new chapter, with a fresh and fearless determination to look at ourselves and our world through the lens of Shakespeare’s plays, all of our creative activity in 2023 will address questions of power," says Acting Artistic Director Erica Whyman. "Who has it, who doesn’t, how does it change a human being, when does it corrupt, and how might it disrupt and liberate?"

In January, the RSC will hold an open application period for 37 Plays, its national playwriting project open to anyone in the U.K. Following in July, the theatre will hold its first national youth conference to discuss the role of the arts in education. Next August, the RSC's company for young people from under-represented backgrounds will present their take on Hamlet in an abridged version directed by Paul Ainsworth.
