The 1996 film Trainspotting will become a stage musical in London's West End this summer, with performances to begin July 15 at Theatre Royal Haymarket. Opening night will be July 22.
Based on a 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting follows 26-year-old heroin addict Mark Renton as he attempts to buck his drug problem. Robbie Scott will star in the upcoming West End bow, playing the role immortalized on screen by Ewan McGregor.
Welsh is adapting the story as the musical's book writer. The score will feature some of the songs from the film's soundtrack, along with "original confrontational and celebratory songs" penned by Welsh and dance music pioneer Stephen McGuinness, aka Steve Mac. Caroline Jay Ranger has conceived the project and is directing.
The production will also feature choreography by Christina Andrea; music supervision, orchestrations, and music direction by Stuart Morley; set and costume design by Colin Richmond; video design by Douglas O'Connell; lighting design by Ian Scott; and sound design by Rory Madden for Sonalyst. Further casting, by Anne Vosser, is to be announced. Denise Ranger will serve as associate director.
