Lucille Lortel-winning musical KPOP is Broadway bound, and as announced last week, the Main Stem bow will star K-pop singer Luna. The production has now also announced the full cast and creative team for the upcoming musical, set to begin previews at the Circle in the Square Theatre October 13 ahead of a November 20 opening night.
Joining Luna from the K-pop world will be Spica and Keembo's Bo Hyung Kim, Miss A's Min Young Lee, and U-KISS' Kevin Woo. The company will also include Julia Abueva, Will Brill, Major Curda, Joomin Hwang, Jinwoo Jung, Jiho Kang, Amy Keum, James Kho, Eddy Lee, Jully Lee, Timothy H. Lee, Abraham Lim, Kate Mina Lin, Aubie Merrylees, Patrick Park, and John Yi. Sixteen in the company will make their Broadway debuts with the production.
KPOP brings K-pop, the entertainment industry, and Korean culture to Broadway as it follows superstars risking everything for a one-night only concert as they face personal struggles that threaten their careers.
Teddy Bergman will direct the production which will feature choreography by Jennifer Weber, music direction by Sujin Kim-Ramsey, scenic design by Gabriel Hainer Evansohn, costume design by Clint Ramos and Sophia Choi, lighting design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, sound design by Peter Hylenski, projection design by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Mia M. Neal, and makeup design by Joe Dulude II.
The work was conceived by Jason Kim and the Woodshed Collective, and featuring a book by Kim with music, lyrics, as well as music and lyrics by Max Vernon. The musical, which won three Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Musical, first opened Off-Broadway in 2017 in its world premiere at Ars Nova. Ma-Yi Theater and the Woodshed Collective also contributed to bringing KPOP to the stage. It was also awarded the 2018 Richard Rodgers Award and an Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience.
