Lucille Lortel-winning musical KPOP will come to the Broadway stage with previews beginning October 13 at Circle in the Square Theatre. K-pop singer Luna will star in the production as announced at a press event at New York's Korean Cultural Center March 30.
Delving into the world of K-pop and the entertainment industry, KPOP brings audiences into the side of the business often not seen as it follows the successes and struggles of a fictional company and its K-pop talent. The work was conceived by Jason Kim and the Woodshed Collective, and featuring a book by Kim with music, lyrics, and music production by Helen Park as well as music and lyrics by Max Vernon.
South Korean singer Luna will star in the musical. She first debuted in a girl group in 2009 before launching a solo career in 2016. The singer has also performed in several original musicals and Korean versions of Broadway favorites including Legally Blonde, In the Heights, and High School Musical on Stage!. KPOP will be her Broadway debut.
The musical, which won three Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Musical, first opened Off-Broadway in 2017. Ma-Yi Theater and the Woodshed Collective also contributed to bringing KPOP to the stage for the run which featured immersive design by Woodshed Collective, choreography by Jennifer Weber, and direction by Teddy Bergman.
KPOP was also awarded the 2018 Richard Rodgers Award and an Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience.
