London News Report: Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey to Star in West End Sunday in the Park with George Revival

The Wicked film co-stars are looking to reunite in 2027.

They aren't ready to "Move On."

Wicked film stars Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are reportedly circling a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park with George. Per Deadline, the pair are in the early planning stages with Tony- and Olivier-winning director Marianne Elliott (Company) for a 2027 production in London's West End.

Should the production move forward, the aim is a summer 2027 opening at the Barbican Theatre. With this news arriving 18 months out, however, there is still plenty of time for various aspects to fall through.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical (with a book by Lapine and a score by Sondheim) follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.

The 2017 Broadway revival of the musical, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, was scheduled to play London in 2020, only to be cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sunday would reunite Bailey with Elliott; the Bridgerton actor was in the director's West End revival of Company, delivering a performance of "Getting Married Today" that earned him an Olivier Award. Sunday would mark Grande's return to the stage after starring in 13 on Broadway in 2008.
