They aren't ready to "Move On."
Wicked film stars Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will star in a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park with George at London's Barbican Centre in Summer 2027. The production had been rumored to be imminent following the mega-hit success of the two-part screen version of Broadway's Wicked, but today's news is the first official confirmation.
The pair have teamed up with Tony- and Olivier-winning director Marianne Elliott (Company), with Tony winner Tom Scutt on board to design the physical production.
This production will reunite Bailey with Elliott; the Bridgerton actor was in the director's West End revival of Company, delivering a performance of "Getting Married Today" that earned him an Olivier Award. Sunday also marks Grande's return to the stage after starring in 13 on Broadway in 2008.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical (with a book by Lapine and a score by Sondheim) follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.
The 2017 Broadway revival of the musical, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, was scheduled to play London in 2020, only to be cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. This production will be produced by Empire Street Productions, in association with the Barbican.
Tickets will go on sale in May 2026, and will only be sold via the official Barbican website and box office. For more information, visit SundayIntheParkMusical.com.
