Ma-Yi Theater Company, which recently presented Lloyd Suh's The Chinese Lady at Off-Broadway's The Public Theater, has revealed further programming for the year.

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, Ma-Yi will again broadcast two of its digital works. First will be Vancouver from Ma-Yi's Producing Artistic Director Ralph B. Peña who wrote and directed the puppet play. Created in collaboration with puppetry director Tom Lee, the play follows a mixed-race family as they relocate from Japan to the Pacific Northwest and addresses anti-Asian aggressions through the experiences of the family as they try to find stability.

Also being broadcast again is the documentary film The First Twenty: 20 Years of Asian American Playwriting. Also created and directed by Peña, the film explores how Asian American plays are perceived, the expansion of subjects being addressed by Asian American writers, and features interviews with David Henry Hwang, Young Jean Lee, Qui Nguyen, Lloyd Suh, Mike Lew, Rehana Lew Mirza, Lauren Yee, and Chay Yew.

Both digital works will be broadcast for the entire month of May.

Following these works, Ma-Yi and 2g will produce Short Stack PLAYFEST June 26 and 27. The festival of short plays will feature works from playwrights at all different places in their careers that have been matched with directors and actors to present two nights of 5-minute comedies.

Lastly, Ma-Yi will present the world premiere of Daniel K. Isaac’s ONCE UPON A (korean) TIME at La MaMa August 23–September 18. The play mixes traditional Korean fables with horrors of the Korean War, exploring the experiences of the Korean American diaspora and the traumas and coping methods that are inherited from generation to generation.
