London's about to go on a great adventure. Kimberly Akimbowill make its London premiere in an Off-West End venue next fall in a new production directed by Michael Longhurst. The Jeanine Tesori-David Lindsay-Abaire musical originally opened on Broadway in 2022, winning the 2023 Tony Award for Best Musical. This new production will play the Hampstead Theatre August 28–November 7.
With music by Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire adapted from his play, Kimberly Akimbo follows Kimberly, a bright New Jersey teenager with an aging disease that makes her look like a 72-year-old lady. See Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire announce the engagement in the video below.
The Broadway production of Kimberly Akimbo began performances at Broadway's Booth Theatre October 12, 2022, and played through April 28, 2024. It won five Tony Awards, including for Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan's performances, Tesori's score, and Lindsay-Abaire's book. It is currently on a national tour in the U.S.
A new scholarship will send three young writers to the 2026 International Thespian Festival to work directly with Playbill on coverage of the week-long event.
